Kind of new to this... again... What is appropriate?
Hello all. I have been a stay at home mum (of 4) for the last 10 yrs, and one of my children has special needs. As you can imagine, I don't get out much. Before life changed, I loved to dress up and took great pains to make sure I presented well whenever I did. This weekend my husband's company is taking the executives and their spouses out for dinner. The location is at Cutler & Co. (Fitzroy). Please help... I have no idea what to wear. Is denim ok? Or should I find a cocktail dress?
...quite a few people in nothing fancier than jeans (not the dark straight kind, just your average pair) and a basic top. I mentioned to my husband that I felt a little over dressed, but he just said that there isn't really a 'dress code' for these types of things anymore. Not sure I believe him anyway, but he does go out a lot more than I do. I want to thank you all for your input and encouragement :) If I can get a photo from hubby's phone and post it, I will. Cheers xx
Ok, I haven't got a photo to show, but I wore the LBD, gold cuff bracelet, gold earrings from Lebanon two extra gold rings (small ones, one on each hand). For a bit of colour I had a dark tangerine nail polish and violet eyeshadow - sounds gaudy, but it works well on me. In the end I was happy with my outfit. It wasn't exactly the latest trend, but it was classic and sophisticated. As for Cutler & Co. - oh my gosh. Amazing. I felt truly spoiled! I did notice though, that there were...
Hi Songflower, sounds like you found the perfect outfit for your dinner date! The LBD and accessories you chose sound very stylish! Hope you had a great night and Cutler & Co was everything it is meant to be!
LBD is always a safe bet, well done on the black dress. Nothing wrong with the stockings and heels - you can try nude stockings if you are worried, but it sounds great to me. You'll be seated most of the evening anyway. Gold accessories is an excellent idea! The cuff, statement earrings... perfect. Don't be nervous, you're going to have an amazing dining experience, half of Melbourne would love to be in your shoes! All the best for a wonderful evening, enjoy yourself :)
I didn't have much success with shopping :( But managed to rustle up a shift style black dress with pin-tucks on the front, tapered in at the waist. It still looks great on, but I was trying to avoid black. Anyway, this with sheer black stockings and black heels - too much black? Maybe a gold cuff with feature earrings to set it off? Or pearl earrings and bracelet? I have to borrow a clutch from my SIL - again, black. Ugh - I'm just so nervous about this whole thing!
Cutler & Co is one of the finest restaurants in Melbourne - I'm not sure you want to wear denim... I'd keep it simple: classic, classy style. Try black trousers with a print blouse and heels, or a skirt with flesh stockings and heels topped with a plain silk top, blazer and feature earrings. A long-sleeve wrap dress is an easy solution, just add dressy shoes and you're away. Remember, you don't have to spend too much to look amazing... happy shopping!

Brittney has great ideas as always - dark denim with a beautifully-fitted blazer will look amazing and you'll be comfy too! Have fun on your night out!
Ladies, thank you all sooo much for such a fast response. I do think I need to go shopping now though... I have about half the things for each possible outfit and nothing that really works together!
I agree with all these stylish ladies! Black pants or black jeans would be perfectly fine. Add some heels and a silky top teamed with a blazer, cropped jacket or fitted jacket and you're good to go. Pop on some makeup that makes you feel confident and treat yourself with a little extra time for your hair. Style it with a little hairspray if you have short hair, or do a chic french twist up-do that takes very little time but always looks chic.
..comfortable & confident & that you dress in a style that is authentic to you. If you feel the best in your jeans - then wear them. Just glam them up a bit. If you decide on a dress, keep it simple, don't overdress it. The place is pretty cool & edgy. Remember it's Fitzroy/Collingwood - not Toorak or Double Bay. Have a great time.
Hi Songflower, Great restaurant! You'll have a wonderful time. I'm with the ladies below. I think jeans are fine if you dress them up. I ate at the restaurant a little while ago & I wore my "good jeans" (skinny/dark), a silk top, a blazer & a pair of pumps. I also carried a vintage beaded clutch to make it feel a bit more evening. A dress (perhaps a wrap style) would also be great, teamed with great heels or a pair of pants with a cropped jacket. The important thing is that you feel ..
I agree with Delia and Jenn, if you would feel more comfortable in denim then a fitted jean in a very dark denim would be the best choice as it's easy to dress up with a nice blouse and a jacket and heels. I think a dress would look great with a pair of tights and heels, add a cardigan or a blazer and maybe a pop of colour in your jewellery or bag choice. A nice all black look is always very elegant- add some interest with your accessories maybe try a leopard print clutch or a statement earring.
Hi Songflower! What a great night out you'll have. Well-deserved too! Cutler & Co is a fabulous place, definitely a chance to dress up. You can choose either jeans (if they are skinny, fitted and dark wash) with a luxe top, blazer and heels OR a dress, opaques and heels (or heeled boots / ankle boots). Add some statement jewellery - either fabulous necklace or earrings and you'll be set! ENJOY!
but If you are feeling the cocktail dress more, try wearing it with black opaque stockings and black high heels to give it a winter feel.
I'd say no to denim but if youd rather wear pants go for a tailored trouser in black, a plain white top or blouse and a statement blazer (grey or black and white print is simple but looks amazing, zara was having a sale last week with some blazers under $100, not sure if its still on though) pair it with some statement heels (I'm a sucker for leopard print, it clashes a little but in a good way lol) and a statement necklace (try lovisa or Colette)
