job interview: library assistant

I have a job interview on Monday for a library assistant. I'm not quite sure what to wear, as it's not exactly a corporate job, but not a "jeans and t-shirt" job either. I was thinking black tailored pants, with a simple light grey top and low black patent wedges. But maybe a blouse and skirt would be better? Any suggestions? Also do you think I can wear a jacket to the interview (to take off when I get there) or should I buy a blazer? Thanks!

I agree with Tiffany. Also, I think a pop of colour would be perfect. I've worked in libraries and my mum is a librarian. As long as your top is not inappropriate in cut, a bright colour will be memorable and shows your bright personality :) good luck!

I find that the perfect way to dress for any interview, is dress like you're meeting your boyfriends parents for the first time. Err on the conservative side, but don't make your look too corporate, make sure you show a little of who you are in your style. Black pants are a great option, and a silk blouse will show your professionalism while being feminine at the same time. I think low rise heels or the wedges are a good option, and soft eye makeup with a classic lip always works well.

There's no issue with wearing pants to an interview, they're smart and practical. I suggest your black pants with your finest blouse (regardless of the colour). Try your outfit on before interview-day so there's no last minute freaking out about a missing button, etc. I'd suggest a classic black blazer is a wardrobe essential and worthwhile investing in. You'll make a better impression in it and it will serve you well in the future. All the very best for your interview, Tori!!

Hi Tori! Congrats on the interview. I am sure they'll be impressed with you! I think either skirt or smart pants will be equally professional. I vote for a colorful shirt, provided it is still businesslike in cut and fabric. A bright colour will be memorable and will let you shine! All the best!!! X

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I will probably wear pants more often on the job, but I've heard your supposed to dress more formal on interview days that you would for the job. I will have a look for a skirt that is appropriate and maybe keep the pants as my back up option. Do you think I should go conservative colours for the blouse? I look better in bright colours, but don't want to be too loud/inappropriate!

Hi Tori, I love the sound of a skirt and a blouse, I think it's sophisticated and perfect for the type of interview you described. I think you could definitely wear a jacket and take it off when you arrive, you could even wear a high waisted skirt with a long sleeve blouse or fitted button up shirt tucked in (eliminating the need for buying a blazer as you won't be cold). Good luck in your interview I am sure you will do a great job!

I would go with pants for a library job, working in a library involves so much bending, pants would show your practical side better. I also think as long as your jacket/coat is clean and smart you could wear it there and take it off when you arrive. Make sure you have already taken it off and have it neatly over your arm or in you bag so you are free to shake hands when you meet your interviewer, you don't want to be fumbling with things. Good luck.
