Getting the Foundations Right

Posted on 25 May 2012 by delia

Hi! Thank-you for your fantastic photos, questions and answers on 'What Should I Wear?'. We love the style ideas and inspiration from our community!

This week we have Andi McCann, a lovely Melbourne stylist sharing her advice with us. You may have met Andi on our site/App during March when she joined our style panel. Andi's feedback is always so kind, helpful and practical! Over to Andi for some brief tips (pun intended!) about how to make the most of your shape.

Bras and Briefs

Get the right bra and it will be the hardest working item in your wardrobe! 90% of the women I dress are wearing the wrong bra. The right bra can be essential for creating a great shape. It elongates the torso and shows off the waist! (& who doesn't want a better shape, without even going to the gym?).

Get Fitted: It is important to get fitted properly for a bra, by experts. Most large department stores (e.g., Myer and David Jones) offer this service. Other smaller specialist stores are also fantastic places to shop, since the staff are so experienced and knowledgeable. Look in your local area for small stores that carry a good range of stock.

Take The Time: A bra shopping excursion takes time and effort (on par with bathers and jeans shopping!). So go prepared to try lots of different bras until you find the right one (or more! It is often worth stocking up on a basic black, a basic nude colour, a t-shirt bra and others for fun).

ABCs: Bras often differ in the sizing and labelling. So a 12C in one brand might be a completely different size in another brand. Which is why an expert fitter can help you find the right match in various types of bras. Don't worry about the size, just worry about the fit.

A Good Investment: A well-fitted bra is a good investment. Remember that it is one of the basics that will define your shape, so it is worth spending a little more to get the best fit. It is a shame to spend money on a stunning dress, but compromise the style due to poor undergarments. That said, you can also try outlet stores to find more affordable prices.

Take Care: Always wash your bras in a laundry bag, or by hand, to make them last. They should retain their shape and elasticity for 6-12 months.

The Understudy: Behind every great bra is a fabulous pair of undies! Remember to invest in underwear too. There are so many options to choose from, but the main focus should be on underwear that fits your curves and does not show lines under your clothes. This is particularly important if you are wearing fitted clothes and want a smooth silhouette. Shape wear is now designed for any age and stage (not just for nannas!) and will provide the perfect basis for dressier outfits.

Thanks Andi! The foundations of an outfit can make a huge difference. Not only to your appearance, but to your self confidence too!

Thanks again for joining the fun at ‘What Should I Wear?’. We look forward to seeing you soon!
